Parents and guardians sometimes want to know what they can do to ensure their child’s success in French Immersion outside of the school day. If this is you, here's some tips:
Get involved with yourLocal Canadian Parents for French Chapterfor activities and learning opportunities for the whole family! You will find other Hawyrlak parents there, too!
Take advantage of the opportunities that our on-line world offers to understand a second language! Visit the links page for more info, especially the DuoLingo link.
Encourage your child to speak in French at home and watch television/play online games in French.
Encourage your child to read in French at home as much as possible. Slowly build up the amount of time that she or he spends doing this. Encourage your child to pick books that are not too hard, but not too easy, in order for them to grow. We talk about this at school: The should be able to tell you how to pick a "Good Fit Book"
A set time and a quiet place to do homework is sometimes useful for some learners
Make sure your child practices multiplication and division facts up to 10, preferably 12, if possible. We will learn tips in class. If these facts are automatic, it frees up working memory for students to do 2 by 1 and 2 by 2 multiplication easily. It also makes 3 by 1 division so much easier.
Have your child help with everyday calculations and estimations around the house to reinforce their arithmetic and problem-solving skills.
Study the Guided Writing Assignments in small, frequent chunks (A little each night goes a long way)
Remind your child that their teacher’s expectation is that they try their best, not that they get high marks on all assignments!
